Electrical Safety Programs, missing in many companies and facilities, can save lives and are required by law can save lives. We can help you form your ESP so that it is robust.
What is an electrical safety program (ESP)? Do we need an ESP? These questions are asked by many managers, operators, and owners.
An Electrical Safety Program or ESP is a case specific plan that directs all interactions with any and all electrical equipment.
Employers are required to identify and protect their workers from workplace hazards. Anytime employees are “interacting with” electrical equipment while energized, they need to have proper trained to adhere to it including PPE, reading of labels, etc. as is prescribed in an ESP. “Interacting with” includes simply turning a breaker on/off even while fully enclosed within a cabinet or panel, as well as measuring voltage and any other forms of testing.
At COR, we can help you and your team develop a ESP for the safety of our team. We start with an ethical and conservative mindset to produce the most robust and safe plan. Below is a list of questions and if you answer no to any of them, you probably need to either update or create a ESP.
- Do you have a current ESP that is actively implemented and kept up to date?
- Does the safety program direct any and all activity that may interact with an electrical hazard?
- Do your workers always have a job briefing?
- Do your workers always establish an electrically safe working condition?
- Do all of your workers test all electrical equipment that they are working on before they start working?
- Are your workers trained regularly to make sure that they always use the most up to date safety protocols and industry best practices?
- Has your safety plan been audited in the last few years?
- Do you have a plan in place to regulate the use of proper electrical PPE?
The questions above do not even cover all of the points of an ESP. NFPA 70E covers this in more detail. Your ESP should be updated regularly, if it has not been, we can audit your ESP.
